After visiting villages in India with Reema Nanavaty, the Rural Development Director of the SEWA (the Self-Employed Women’s Association), Dan Morrison sent out a Christmas card to family and friends asking for donations to help build a well in Vachharajpur village. The response was overwhelming. Within a week, Dan had raised enough money to build the well. This success served as Dan’s conceptual foundation for 1Well. Socially conscious groups and individuals (Social Venture Capitalists or SVCs) can partner with a community in need to raise funds that is directly used to provide people with access to clean drinking water, childcare facilities, clean energy, and nutritious food.

After the concept for 1Well was solidified, Dan turned to the pro bono services of Akin Gump for legal help. Akin Gump lawyers have assisted 1Well in addressing issues such as taxes, corporate and international trade, labor, real estate, and intellectual property. Akin Gump’s assistance has made it possible for 1Well to devote its funds directly to projects. Thomas McCarthy, a partner at Akin Gump, also serves as a board member for 1Well.
